In 2006, Steffan Tubbs, a news anchor for 850 KOA Denver, returned home from assignment in Iraq where he witnessed soldiers making peace by passing out soccer balls. He immediately contacted his friend Trevor Slavick, an airline pilot who had a history of giving away balls to kids on his layovers around the world. They launched “Little Feet, Big Goals!” a one-month campaign to send soccer balls to kids in war-torn Iraq.
The campaign was a huge success and they began receiving requests for soccer balls from all over the world. In order to meet the requests, more friends got involved and Little Feet was started with one big goal; send soccer balls to underprivileged children around the world. Little Feet sells soccer balls using the “one laptop per child” business model; for every ball someone buys, an additional ball is donated to a player in need. Little Feet has now sent thousands of soccer balls to children in over 40 countries worldwide.
During a Little Feet trip in the spring of 2008, we came upon a coffee cooperative in the foothills of Honduras where the children were playing soccer with burlap coffee sacks instead of a real soccer ball. The farmers in the community gave us some of their coffee and asked us if we could help them sell it when we returned home. They said if they got a fair price, they would be able to provide for their families. Perhaps then, their kids could play with real soccer balls, instead of the coffee sacks we saw them playing with. So we agreed to help, and in the spirit of our mission, decided to call it Little Feet Coffee.
Today, the Little Feet Coffee Company purchases our coffee primarily from the farmers of the Las Capucas Cooperative in Honduras. The farmers are earning above current fair trade pricing for their coffee and receiving profit sharing from our sales. And on the field where there used to be a few kids kicking around a burlap coffee sack, there are over 200 children kicking Little Feet Soccer balls and playing the “beautiful game”
There are and has been countless people involved with Little Feet in one way or another. To list all the names here would be impossible. To every one who has ever done something for Little Feet, there are thousands of kids around the world who thank you!
