La Cancha de Futbol de Little Feet: Las Capucas, Honduras

Dedicated November 10, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

LITTLE FEET BUILDS SOCCER FIELD TO BENEFIT CHILDREN IN RURAL HONDURAS

LAS CAPUCAS, SAN PEDRO COPAN, HONDURAS (December 10th, 2010) - Little Feet has announced the completion of their first soccer field project, located in the mountains of San Pedro Copan, Honduras. Since 2006, Little Feet has operated on a one-for-one model, donating a soccer ball to a disadvantaged child for each one sold. The “La Cancha de Futbol” project demonstrates its vision to go beyond one-time equipment donation, to a more broad-based approach of improving the quality of life for children in impoverished areas.

The project has transformed the original field from a small, dusty area into a 91-meter by 61-meter full-sized grass pitch. By excavating and moving roughly 4,000 cubic meters of rock and dirt, the engineering and construction team graded the site to allow the heavy rains that wash through the area to properly drain. “The team put in a lot of effort in the design and coordination of the construction,” says Lucas Corsbie, a southern-California professional engineer and the lead engineer on the project. “The opportunity to apply my design experience to such a great cause was very exciting. The true reward is seeing the kids of Las Capucas enjoying their favorite sport on a field that they have always dreamed of playing on.”

Flying weekly routes from Miami to Honduras as a commercial airline pilot, Little Feet Founder Trevor Slavick began donating soccer balls to Honduran children since 1999. In 2008, Las Capucas became the Central American hub of Little Feet's philanthropy through the establishment of the Little Feet Coffee Company. The company sells the 100% organic, Rainforest Alliance-certified coffee grown in Las Capucas to consumers in the United States at above fair-trade prices, in an effort to improve the quality of life in the small village. Through the soccer field project, Little Feet has proven their lasting commitment to ensuring the wellbeing of the families of Las Capucas.

"On the day we started Little Feet Coffee, we made a commitment to one day build a soccer field for the kids in their community," says Slavick. "On November 10, 2010, Little Feet delivered on that promise. We are already out there searching for our next coffee cooperative to work with. There are hundreds of other coffee cooperatives around the world who could benefit from our model and with the support of Little Feet Coffee drinkers, our soccer field in Las Capucas will just be the first of many to come."
